It purports to use similar triangles to facilitate computation of multiplication, division, roots, trigonometric functions, etc. using a pair of arms connected by a hinge. These arms are engraved with scales of various dimensions, the primary scale being known as a line of lines. It makes sense that ratios betweens sides of triangles could be used for division, as, given that the sector is opened such that the distance between the arms at point marked 27 is 100, then the distance between the arms where the point is 9 will represent 100/3, because the ratio between the sides of the larger and smaller triangles is 3.
